It can be tough to stay motivated to save money, especially when the going gets tough. You are bombarded by ads to switch up your wardrobe each season. You want to redecorate your bathroom. Your kids are asking for the latest PS-Box-Switch game system.

- A dream two-week trip for the family
- Renovating your kitchen
- Building up your retirement savings (or saving for early retirement)
- Starting an education fund for your kids
- Eliminate credit card debt with your savings
- Quit your 9-5 job to work part-time or start a business

Make sure your financial goal isn’t too difficult or impossible to reach, but also make sure it’s not so easy that you won’t try hard enough!
Paying off all your debt this year might not be achievable (yet!), so pick a money saving goal that feels like a challenge, but one that you can meet.
You need both motivation and effort if you want anything at all in life.

Don’t worry about what has happened in the past or what might happen in the future.
We have all made financial mistakes. Now is the time to learn from them, let them go, and move forward.
Just take things one step at a time and you will reach your goal. The present is what matters the most so don’t get ahead of yourself.

Visualize yourself achieving your goal. This is a great technique that can be used for any goal. It’s basically like daydreaming about our future and how we’ll feel once we’ve reached our goal.
By doing this, we’re planting the seeds for success and growth. Plus, it’s always fun imagining how happy we’re going to feel when that day finally comes.
Picture yourself having already achieved your goal. What does that look and feel like? This can be a great source of motivation to save money because it gives you something tangible to work towards.
7. Reward Yourself for Saving Money
This is a step that lots of people skip, and a step I don’t see other personal finance experts talking about.
But it is very important and will keep up your motivation to save money.
Reward yourself when things are going well. For example, if you’ve stuck with your goal for a week, then reward yourself with whatever makes you happy (within reason).
Don’t make this too big, though, as it may take away from your progress.
I recommend letting yourself have 10% of your saved money to spend on whatever you want. The other 90% stays in savings.
This will also help with motivation to save money because it gives you something positive to look forward to.

Don’t forget to take a break, if needed. This is something we need to remember! If we’re feeling burnt out, it’s probably not the best time to work on our goal.

We need to take some time for ourselves and relax so that when we come back, we’ll be refreshed and motivated.

Some people will have more money saved than you, and some will have less.
Comparing the amount of money you have can lower your motivation to save money. As tempting as it is, try not to compare yourself to others.
We all have our unique path in life, and it’s important to remember that everyone is going at their own pace. I know it can be challenging when you see someone else achieving something great, but if we keep trying, we will eventually get there too!

This may sound like a no-brainer, but it’s something we all need to remember from time to time.

Don’t forget why you started your goal of saving money in the first place.
This is a great question to ask ourselves whenever we feel discouraged or unmotivated to save money. It will help us remember what our goal was all about and why it’s important to us. Sometimes we need a quick reminder of what we’re fighting for.
