Selling Used Items on Amazon

We have already shared lots of guides on Amazon, including how Amazon FBA works, what to sell, the best Amazon FBA course to take if you’re serious about succeeding on Amazon (spoiler: it’s this one), and lots more.

You can find all the posts on Amazon here.

In this guide, we’ll answer the following questions:

Can I resell an item I bought on Amazon?

Can I sell someone else’s product on Amazon?

What used items can you sell on Amazon?

And more.

Can I Sell Used Products On Amazon

When most people think of buying on Amazon, they picture buying new products: toys, furniture, clothing, etc.

But there is a HUGE used market on Amazon too.

There are two main ways for how to sell used items on Amazon:

  1. On Amazon Warehouse
  2. Directly on Amazon.com

Amazon Warehouse is part of the Amazon.com platform.

It is where people can buy – and sell –  pre-owned, used, and open box items.

When I sold books on Amazon, I sold directly on Amazon.com, not through Amazon Warehouse.

Let’s go over a couple of common questions I hear:

Can I resell an item I bought on Amazon?

Yes absolutely.

Nobody will know if that shirt you’re selling originally came from Amazon, if you found it for a great price at Target, or you scored it from a thrift store with the tag still on.

But…

Just because you CAN resell an item you bought on Amazon, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

You need to think about profit margins.

How much did you pay for that shirt on Amazon?

And then what amount could you turn around and sell that shirt for right back on Amazon?

It’s unlikely that this is a good business model for selling on Amazon.

Here is a free sales estimator to help you decide what products are worth selling on Amazon and what to sell them for.

Can I sell someone else’s product on Amazon?

Yes, I mean, most people are who sell on Amazon.

Unless you are a maker and are selling homemade products on Amazon Handmade, you will be selling someone else’s product on Amazon.

Another question I hear is: Can you buy a product at the store and sell it on Amazon?

The answer is yes. This is called retail arbitrage.

Sign up for this free course to see if a side hustle selling on Amazon is the right fit for you. It will teach you everything you need to know before you start your Amazon business.

There are three main ways Amazon sellers procure products to sell:

  • Retail arbitrage
  • Wholesale
  • Private label

With private label, you decide what you want to make, find your own manufacturer, strike your own deals for making the product, ordering wholesale, pricing for Amazon, etc.

Private label is not the easiest way to get started with selling on Amazon and I don’t recommend it for beginners.

The products that you sell through private label though, are the most ‘yours’, other than if you made them yourself with your very own hands.

Retail arbitrage is the simplest method to start selling on Amazon.

You go to stores, either in person or online, buy products, and resell them.

When I was selling books on Amazon, I used the retail arbitrage method.

I went to book sales and bought new books to resell. I also shopped at thrift stores and garage sales to buy used books to resell on Amazon.

For the wholesale method, you aren’t dealing with manufacturing a new product so it is somewhat simpler than private label. But you are buying higher quantities of each item than if you were doing retail arbitrage.

When using the wholesale method, you had better be pretty darn sure your products will sell with a good profit margin because you are likely buying a lot more of one item.

Whereas if a product that you bought half a dozen of via retail arbitrage doesn’t sell, well, that’s only six items compared to pallets-full.

If you want to avoid failure as an Amazon seller (used items or new), this software is a must for serious sellers. It will help you determine what to sell, track your profits, analyze the competition, and much more.

What Used Items Can You Sell on Amazon

Here are the main categories of used items you can sell on Amazon Warehouse:

  • Laptops and Tablets
  • Home and Kitchen
  • Home Improvement
  • Vacuums
  • Digital Camera
  • Video Games
  • Automotive
  • Musical Instruments
  • T.V.
  • Baby Products
  • Clothing and Accessories
  • Lawn and Garden

A bonus for your customers if you sell used items on Amazon is that they also qualify for Amazon Prime shipping.

When selling right on Amazon.com, you can sell used books, used video games, used DVDs and CDs, and more.

How Do You Sell Used Items On Amazon

It works similarly to selling new products on Amazon, with an additional step where the condition of the item is checked by Amazon and a grade is assigned.

If you’re selling used items directly on Amazon.com, you often have to assign a grade yourself.

For each used book I uploaded to Amazon through the Amazon Seller app, I had to state if the book was in like new condition, very good condition, good condition, or acceptable.

This is not something you want to exaggerate on!

If your book is only in acceptable condition and you grade it at very good, the truth is going to come out at some point.

A customer buys your used book from Amazon based on the price for a used book in “very good” condition, and sees that it’s not. Your Amazon shop gets a disgruntled customer and likely a bad rating.

Be very fair in your ratings.

Now…

If you are selling used items on Amazon Warehouse, these are the steps you will follow:

  1. In the Amazon Seller app, click on “Manage Inventory”, and then “Add Product”.
  2. Enter all the details of your used item, including accurate condition notes.
  3. Ship your products to an Amazon warehouse.
  4. Some used products are tested to make sure they are in working order.
  5. A grade is assigned to your used items.
  6. Your products are listed on Amazon Warehouse at a discount.

This is very similar to the process of selling new items on Amazon. The main extra step is grading the condition of your used items for sale.

When selling used items on Amazon, you can either use Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) or Amazon FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant).

If you use Amazon FBA, you will ship boxes of your products to an Amazon warehouse.

Amazon will store, handle, package, and ship your used items when customers buy them.

If you use Amazon FBM, you’ll store and ship the used items to each customer as the products are purchased.
