The first time I read a HealthyWage review about how to get paid to lose weight, I thought “well that’s a total scam if I ever heard one” and promptly dismissed it.

(I also used to think that getting paid to search the web and mystery shopping both sounded totally scammy, until I tried them for myself. What can I say, I’m a skeptic.)

Then I read another HealthyWage review from a personal finance blogger I trust and it sounded legitimate. I decided to look more into the idea of how to get paid money to lose weight. So, it is a scam, or is it legit?

HealthyWage review: How does HealthyWage work

How HealthyWage works is simple. It is a weight loss tool that uses financial incentives to help motivate you to lose weight.

In short, you bet money on your own weight loss. If you lose the weight in the timeframe you decided on at the beginning, you win the prize money, up to $10,000.

How HealthyWage works in 4 steps:

1. Try the Prize Calculator

Enter your stats: how much weight you want to lose, how long you need to reach your goal, and how much you would like to bet per month.

Then you calculate your prize – this is fun!

You get to see how much money you would make by losing weight.

2. Make your bet

Using the prize calculator, you can adjust your goal weight, how much you contribute, and the amount of time you expect it to take, to increase your winnings.

Then make your wager!

3. Lose the weight

Choose how you want to lose weight, what you think will work with your personality and life.

You can stay on track throughout the contest with weekly weigh-ins and support from other contestants. Exchange encouragement, tips, recipes, and more, with other participants.

Use HealthyWage’s progress tracking charts to keep you motivated.

4. Win money!

Meet your weight loss goal and win your prize.

If your weight is at or below your goal during your two week weigh-out window, you win your prize.

How much does it cost to join HealthyWage

There is no one set amount that everyone pays to join HealthyWage.

The amount it costs to join HealthyWage will depend on your own stats and calculations using the Prize Calculator.

They have a proprietary algorithm which takes into account things like your weight, BMI, the amount you bet, the amount of time you want to lose the weight, the time of year you make your bet, and so on.

HealthyWage is constantly fine tuning the algorithm so there is no guarantee that two people with similar stats will have a similar payout. Once you make your bet, your prize amount is guaranteed. It won’t change.

An important HealthyWage review question: Is HealthyWage legit

This wouldn’t be a good HealthyWage review if I didn’t directly answer this question.

Yes, HealthyWage is 100% legit.

HealthyWage started in 2009 so they are not a new company. They have been featured in these reputable publications: Forbes, The Huffington Post, New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, fitness, Real Simple, Shape, and many more.

HealthyWage has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

HealthyWage social proof

The HealthyWage app on the Apple App Store is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 12,600 ratings. This is a big sample size, not like HealthyWage reviews from only three people who are related to HealthyWage’s owners.

HealthyWage has over 114,000 likes on its Facebook page and if you want to check yourself if HealthyWage is legit, just post something on their Facebook wall and see what HealthyWage reviews come in from participants.

Honestly, I was surprised by how reputable this business is. I went into researching for this HealthyWage review with a fairly high level of skepticism, and I have been surprised by what I learned about this company.

How does HealthyWage verify weight

This is something I immediately wondered when I was thinking about writing a HealthyWage review.

How can they tell that you are actually losing the weight you say you are?

HealthyWage’s solution to this is you have to get your weight verified remotely.

This process takes only about 30 seconds on the HealthyWage app.

You literally step on a scale in your house and a referee watches remotely.

The only verified weigh-ins you have to do are one at the start of the challenge, and one at the end of the challenge. Any weekly weight checks you do are self-reports and not required.

HealthyWage cheating: can you cheat HealthyWage

You can’t cheat HealthyWage because of the weight verification process.

They have someone watching you weigh yourself so you can’t make up numbers or have your partner witness a fictitious weight loss.

Can you lose money on HealthyWage

Yes you can lose money on HealthyWage.

If you don’t reach the goal weight you set for yourself at the beginning (within a two week window), you can lose the money you wagered.

For many people, financial incentives are a great weight loss tools, but it is possible to lose money on HealthyWage.

In an article in The Washington Post, George Loewenstein, a behavioral economist at Carnegie Mellon University who has studied financial incentives and weight loss says the HealthyWage competition is “using all the conditions that have been found in the research to be successful.”

What’s the catch with HealthyWage

There actually doesn’t seem to be one.

If everyone claimed to make money from HealthyWage, that would not be a feasible – or believable – business model. But the fact that many people win money for losing weight and some people lose money by not reaching their goal is a believable business model.

HealthyWage also makes money from corporate and government clients who are interested in creative solutions to weight loss.

There are no strings to get paid. The only requirement is that you lose the weight in the timeframe you set up.

Does HealthyWage really pay

HealthyWage pays their winners by check or through PayPal.

And HealthyWage really pays.

There are tons of video reviews of HealthyWage, including HealthyWage reviews where the participants show the check or PayPal statement they received for losing weight.

How long does it take to get paid from HealthyWage

The weight verification referees usually need less than a day to certify a winner.

In some cases it’s determined that further investigation is needed and then it can take from a few days up to a week to get paid.

If you choose PayPal, you will get paid faster than if you choose to get paid via a check. If you get certified quickly (most cases), it’s possible to get paid from HealthyWage within 12 hours of winning.

Final thoughts on this HealthyWage review

I’m glad I put aside my scepticism about this unusual weight loss method so that I could write a HealthyWage review.

I’m impressed by what I learned about this company, and happy to share with you a way to get paid to lose weight.

Another bonus with using HealthyWage to get paid to lose weight is you can refer your friends to make extra money. For each referred friend who signs up, you get an extra $80, and your friend gets a $40 bonus. Win, win!
