There’s a very specific kind of joy that comes with having a little extra money. It’s not “buy a yacht” energy, it’s more like “wait… I could actually make my life easier??” Suddenly, you’re in a position where you can upgrade instead of just getting by. The right upgrades are not about being flashy. They’re about making your everyday life feel smoother, calmer, and maybe even a little bit magical.

Life Upgrades to Make When You Finally Have Extra Money
How much money do you need to be happy?
Whoever says they don’t need money to be happy obviously has enough of it.
If you can’t meet your basic needs, it makes sense that for lots of people there will be a lower level of life satisfaction. And basic happiness levels increase as income increases, to $100,000 and beyond (Princeton study).
There’s something kind of magical about that moment when you go from just getting by to having a bit of breathing room.
It’s not always a huge windfall. Sometimes it’s just enough. Enough to stop stressing over every dollar. Enough to start asking a new question:
“What would actually make my life better?”
Upgrading your life isn’t about becoming fancy overnight. It’s about making changes that give you more peace, more time, and more joy (without a regret hangover later).
Here are 10 things worth upgrading when you have the money to do it.
1. Make (or Update) Your Will
Okay, not the most exciting place to start. But one of the most important.
If you don’t have a will yet, this is your sign. And if you do have one, it might need an update (especially after big life changes like kids, moves, or new assets).
It’s one of those “future you (and your family) will be incredibly grateful” upgrades.

2. Invest in Your Health
This is the upgrade that quietly changes everything.
Some health-related things you might want to upgrade:
- Higher-quality groceries
- More fresh foods and less ultra-processed stuff
- Supplements (if needed)
- Regular checkups
- Maybe even therapy or fitness classes
If you want to live a long time with this extra money you have, taking care of your health is the most important thing.

3. Upgrade Your Home
You don’t need a full renovation moment.
Start small:
- Better lighting
- A mattress that doesn’t ruin your back
- Decluttering + smart storage
- Fresh paint or cozy touches
Your home should feel like your haven, not just where you land at the end of the day.
I have a loft bedroom and I adore it. It feels like being in a cozy ski chalet. I literally feel myself getting 10% calmer and %15 happier when I’m up there.

4. Get Yourself a Cleaner
This one feels like a luxury…until you realize it’s actually a sanity-saver.
Even once a month can:
- Take a huge mental load off
- Free up your weekends
- Make your home feel reset
You’re not lazy for outsourcing this. When you have extra money, you’re choosing your time back.
For me, I love cooking, so that’s not an area I want to outsource.. But I haaaate cleaning.
Except angry cleaning – love that.
Having a house cleaner come in once in a while has felt like total bliss.
And I can still angry clean in between visits when I want to.

5. Upgrade Your Time
This is the mindset shift that changes how you spend money forever.
Ask yourself:
“What tasks drain me the most?”
Then look for ways to reduce them:
- Grocery delivery
- Meal kits
- Lawn care
- Childcare swaps or help
Not everything needs to be DIY forever.
6. Build a Proper Emergency Fund
We don’t know what suprise expenses will come our way, but there will be some in all of our lives.
If you’ve been living paycheck to paycheck, having a solid emergency fund is a huge upgrade in peace.
Aim for:
- 3 – 6 months of expenses (increasing to one year if possible)
- Starting small is completely fine
This isn’t super exciting but it turns panic into calm when life inevitably throws something your way.
7. Upgrade Your Wardrobe
Not a total closet overhaul (unless that’s your happy place).
Instead of buying lots of cheaper pieces, start replacing things with:
- Better quality basics
- Clothes that actually fit well
- Pieces you genuinely love wearing
Getting dressed becomes easier (yay!), and you stop wasting money on things you barely use.

8. Invest in Learning (Skills = Future Money)
One of the best long-term upgrades you can make.
Like:
- Online courses
- Certifications
- Business or side hustle education
- Even books that genuinely teach you something new
Skills have a way of paying you back, sometimes many times over.

9. Strengthen Your Relationships 🥹
This is an underrated upgrade.
Use your resources to:
- Visit family more often
- Plan meaningful experiences
- Take time off to be present
- Show up for people you care about
This is something I have always naturally had an easy time spending money on. 🙂 I have been really frugal in some areas of my life, especially when I was younger, but I have always spent the money I had on experiences and people.
You don’t always need money to strengthen relationships, but it can help, especially if you have long-distance people you love.

10. Help Others With Your Wealth and Your Time
There’s something very grounding about this one.
When you have a little extra money, consider:
- Donating to causes you care about
- Supporting small businesses
- Helping a friend who’s struggling
- Volunteering your time
Having extra money means you have more to give to things that are important to you, and make a positive impact on this little crazy world of ours.
Final Thoughts
Upgrading your life isn’t about impressing anyone.
It’s about creating a life that feels:
- calmer
- lighter
- more supported (thank you, house cleaner!)
- and a little more you, whether that’s twice daily matcha runs, or buying pre-dirty denim for your pocket dog.
