Enchiladas! Now that I have your attention, I want to share my HelloFresh review and tell you why I changed my mind about meal subscription services (well, this one anyways!).

Looking for HelloFresh Reviews for 2021? Here’s Mine

You might have heard of Hello Fresh meal kits, but if not, I’ll give you the beta.

HelloFresh is a meal subscription service that provides you with prepped but not cooked meal kits. All the chopping and sauces and spice mixes are done for you to save you time, then you cook the meals yourself.

You get to pick your preference for types of meals: family friendly, vegetarian, quick, calorie smart, etc. and pick how many meals you want that week.

I had these meal kits recently at my friend’s house (and helped her make them so I know they’re easy to make!), but I hadn’t ordered any myself until this eve.

To be honest, I hadn’t been super interested before trying out any type of meal kit or meal subscription service. First of all, I didn’t assume they’d be that good. Second, I sort of didn’t see the point of it saving time if you still had to do the cooking. How was this better than take-out?

But after trying out HelloFresh at my friend’s, I was surprised at how good the meals tasted. I decided to try it for myself and share my honest HelloFresh review (the good and the bad).

How Does HelloFresh Work?

The idea of HelloFresh is that it takes all the tedious meal planning and meal prep out of making dinner.

You can choose meals for either 2 people or 4 people and also the number of recipes you want per week, between 2 and 6 recipes.

Then you select the types of meals you prefer. You can choose from:

  • Meat & Veggies
  • Vegetarian
  • Family Friendly
  • Calorie Smart
  • Quick & Easy
  • Pescatarian

After you choose all that and checkout, you get to choose the exact recipes you want for the upcoming week(s). There are 25+ different recipes to pick from each week.

You can skip a week, pause the meal kits, or cancel at any time.

HelloFresh Review: Is HelloFresh Healthy?

Yes, HelloFresh can be healthy.

HelloFresh meals can also be not healthy. It depends on the meals you choose and portion sizes you eat.

Each recipe gives you the nutrition facts per serving so you just have to click on the recipe to see all that and make your choices if you want to keep your HelloFresh meals healthy.

I don’t eat huge meals, especially for dinner, so a half portion of one of the larger HelloFresh meals was perfect for me. That meant I had the leftovers for lunch the next day, making these meal kits even less expensive per serving.

There are Calorie Smart meals and you can choose HelloFresh meals just from those. Calorie Smart dinners average 600 calories per meal, and many are low-carb meals.

HelloFresh Menu

HelloFresh menus change each week but here are some examples of the meals that were available when I wrote this HelloFresh review:

  • One-Pan Santa Fe Pork Tacos with Monterey Jack & Cilantro Lime Slaw
  • Creamy Lemon Spinach Ricotta Ravioli with Roasted Bell Pepper & Parmesan
  • Peachy Keen BBQ-Rubbed Pork Chops with Lemony Green Beans & Garlic Rice
  • Salmon in Creamy Dijon Chive Sauce with Roasted Potato Wedges & Lemony Zucchini
  • Chicken in Dijon Sauce with Balsamic Greens & Grapes plus Garlic Bread
  • Shawarma Chickpea Couscous Bowls with Roasted Carrots, Pickled Shallot & Harissa Yogurt
  • Toasted Coconut Tempura Shrimp with Tropical Slaw, Lime Rice & Sweet ’n’ Spicy Sauce

You can sort by the different categories of HelloFresh meals you’re interested in, or you can view the whole menu of 25+ options each week.

HelloFresh Meals

HelloFresh meals are grouped into different categories.

You can choose up to 3 of these 6 categories:

  • Meat & Veggies
  • Vegetarian
  • Family Friendly
  • Calorie Smart
  • Quick & Easy
  • Pescatarian

Then you’ll get shown the recipes that fall into those categories.

You can change the categories each time you order, if you feel like vegetarian meals one week, and meat and veggie meals another week.

The HelloFresh meals were all created by professional chefs and nutritionists, and nutrition facts are provided for each recipe. Some recipes allow substitutions; others don’t.

For the meals that I ordered for this HelloFresh review, I didn’t make any substitutions.

HelloFresh Review of the 3 Meals I Chose

I decided to start with three meals per week for the first month of these meal kits.

It took me only a couple of minutes to set up my new HelloFresh account, picking three meals per week for two people.

Then I picked Family Friendly meals, and Vegetarian meals since those were the main ones I was interested in.

After I put my payment info in, they take you to the recipe page where you get to pick your meals for the week – the most fun part!

They automatically load 3 meals (or however many you picked per week). You can switch out any of the meals they chose for you and I ended up switching out all three meals.

I’m not vegetarian but I don’t eat a lot of meat so I mainly ordered fish and veggie-centered meal kits. And I like spicy food but my stomach does not so I filtered out all the meal options with the little hot pepper symbol.

With that in mind, here are the HelloFresh meals I picked…

Meals I Chose for this HelloFresh Review

  1. Roasted Veggie Medley with Goat Cheese and Candied Pecans
Hello Fresh review: Roasted vegetable salad with candied pecans and goat cheese

Prep + Cook Time: 35 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Calories: 820 per portion
Protein: 18 grams per portion

This HelloFresh meal was the one I was most looking forward to and it did not disappoint. I loved every part of it, from the creamy goat cheese to the crunchy pecans, and all the roasted veggies.

It felt satisfying and healthy at the same time – my kind of meal. I had enough leftover for a full serving for lunch the next day.

2. Seed-Crusted Chicken with Bulger Salad

Hello Fresh review: chicken with bulger

Prep + Cook Time: 30 minutes
Difficulty: medium
Calories: 990 per portion
Protein: 60 grams per portion

I was looking forward to this Hello Fresh meal the least of the three because I’m not a huge chicken fan. I ordered it because I thought my 5-year-old would love it and she did.

What surprised me is I loved it too. The chicken came out so tender and flavorful with the crunchy seed topping. The bulger salad gave me the big portions of veg I like with my dinner (and that I don’t always make myself if I’m being honest!)

3. Salmon Bites and Chunky Fries

Hello Fresh review: fish with sweet potato fries and cucumber salad

Prep + Cook Time: 30 minutes
Difficulty: medium
Calories: 890 per portion
Protein: 35 grams per portion

And then I added a side of Crave-Worthy Garlic Bread, because yum. (Clearly this week I was not on the low-carb plan.)

The garlic bread was, of course, delicious. It would be hard to screw up garlic bread.

My daughter used to like salmon and now it’s hit and miss with her. I thought salmon with a topping like in this meal kit would be more of a hit than naked salmon and I was right (yay for eating the same meal as your kids!).

Chunky fries are very kid-friendly and she loves cucumbers so this HelloFresh meal was a win.

HelloFresh Review: Pros

  • Faster meal prep since all the chopping, stirring, mixing is done for you
  • Gets you out of meal ruts
  • Gives you well-rounded meals (like, all the food groups, folks)
  • Cuts down on food waste because every ingredient is accounted for
  • Can save you money by decreasing food waste
  • Fun activity to make the meal kits with your kids
  • Fresh meals when you’re pressed for time, instead of take-out or frozen meals

HelloFresh Review: Cons

  • The delivery time for HelloFresh is a large range. Meals can be delivered any time from 8am – 8pm. Though they do include ice packs so your food stays fresh, I’m not a super huge fan of leaving food outside all day. I’d rather have a 4 hour delivery window if that was an option.
  • Unless you’re paying attention to nutrition information for the HelloFresh meals, there are some calorie bombs. To combat this, choose Calorie Smart meals, or just check the nutrition facts for the HelloFresh meals you’re interested in.
  • It’s cheaper to make everything from scratch. You’re paying for the convenience.

Overall Review of Hello Fresh: Some Surprises

There were some unexpected pluses and unexpected minuses of HelloFresh.

A huge plus was the fun factor.

My daughter helped me cook dinner and loved the kit element. When she helps make dinner, she eats more of it so that’s a HUGE win for me.

Especially when we had meals like salmon and veggies and different grains (hello farro and bulger instead of spaghetti!)

There was a bit more cooking than I expected.

For the roasted veggie medley with goat cheese and candied pecans, I assumed I would get a package of candied pecans. And then my contribution would be opening that package and sprinkling them with a flourish over the dish. But I actually made the candied pecans, with the caramelizing sugar and all that jazz. (This is way easier than it sounds…took me 3 minutes.)

When I initially read over the recipe, I thought all the steps would take longer than they said, but I found the times given to be true. All three meals took me around 30 minutes to make, start to finish. And for a super well-balanced and delicious meal, I was really happy with that.

With all the meals, I had enough food left over for a lunch for me the next day. If you are feeding a hungry teenager, you probably won’t have leftovers, but you’re probably used to that!

HelloFresh Review: Final Thoughts

Would I order HelloFresh meals every week 5 or 6 days a week for a whole year?

Probably not.

I like cooking from scratch.

I like experimenting in the kitchen.

But at times when I’m stuck in a food rut and just think “ugh, what should I make for dinner” I would absolutely order HelloFresh for a few weeks or even months.

And in extra busy times where I still want a mainly-from-scratch meal, I would order these meal kits during those times too.

So for me it’s not an all-the-time thing, but a complement to my usual cooking and meal planning.

Having the HelloFresh meals reminded me of different spices and seasonings that I had forgotten to use.

And gave me meal ideas that I would want to recreate and improvise on when I have more time in the kitchen.

I thought I would try out HelloFresh for a couple weeks and that would be enough. But I actually really like the meals. It had us eating more well-rounded, balanced, and delicious meals than I would make during the workweek.

I’m going to keep going with HelloFresh meals for a few more weeks, then give it a break to go back to my regular cooking for a while!

  1. This look very good! I would love to try one of these services but in my country I don’t think they exist right now.

    1. Hi! I was surprised with how good they are! I made another kit this evening for dinner. 🙂 Maybe they will expand to your country at some point or another meal subscription service might start there. They are definitely handy.
