Favorite Apple Recipes to Celebrate Apple Season

One of my favorite fall activities was going to an apple orchard every year.

I say “was” because I moved to the prairies and fall is all about corn mazes and pumpkin patches here!

But growing up, my sister and I went to this huge apple orchard called Chudleigh’s apple farm. We’d pick apples, and climb ladders and pick more apples, and go on tractor rides, and pet barn cats.

We would bring home bags and bags of different kinds of apples. My mom would make homemade apple pies, brown sugar apple crisp, and apple cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast before school.

It’s what fall feels like to me and I still miss it.

Here are the answers to your pressing apples questions (…make apple juice…🤭)

Can I freeze apples?

Yes, you can absolutely freeze apples! 🍏❄️ It all depends on how you want to use them later.

For baking or cooking

Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss them in lemon juice to prevent browning. Spread the slices on a baking sheet to freeze individually before transferring them to a freezer bag.

For smoothies

Chop the apples into chunks and freeze them as-is. No need to thaw—just blend straight from the freezer!

For applesauce or purees

Cook the apples first, then freeze in portions using an airtight container or ice cube trays.

Frozen apples won’t have the same crisp texture when thawed, but they’re perfect for pies, crumbles, and other delicious treats! 🍎

What can I do with lots of apples?

If you’ve got a ton of apples, here are the three best things to make:

1. Homemade Applesauce

Simple, cozy, and freezer-friendly! Just peel, chop, and simmer apples with a little cinnamon and sugar (or leave it unsweetened). Mash for a chunky sauce or blend for a smooth one.

2. Apple Crisp

The easiest (and I think best) fall dessert! Toss sliced apples with sugar and cinnamon, then top with a buttery oat crumble. Bake until golden and serve with vanilla ice cream. Instant happiness.

3. Apple Butter

Like applesauce, but thicker, richer, and more spreadable. Slow-cook apples with sugar, cinnamon, and cloves until they caramelize. Apple butter is amazing on toast, pancakes, or straight off the spoon.

How do you preserve a large amount of apples?

How many apples are we talking here? A few pounds or a full orchard? 😆

Here are five ways to preserve apples so they don’t go to waste:

1. Freezing 🍏❄️

  • Slice or chop apples and toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning
  • Spread them on a baking sheet to freeze individually before storing in freezer bags
  • Use frozen apples in pies, crisps, or smoothies later

2. Canning 🍎🥫

  • Make and can applesauce, apple butter, or apple pie filling
  • Use a water bath canner for long-term storage (they last for over a year!)

3. Dehydrating 🍏🔆

  • Slice apples thin and dry them in a dehydrator or low oven (200°F) until chewy or crisp.
  • Store in airtight containers for a delicious, shelf-stable snack.

4. Making Apple Cider or Juice 🍎🥤

  • Press apples into fresh cider or juice and refrigerate
  • For long-term storage, pasteurize and freeze it in bottles

5. Storing Apples Whole 🍏🧺

  • Keep fresh apples in a cool, dark place (like a basement or fridge)
  • Store them in single layers, wrapped individually in newspaper to prevent bruising
