Whimsy Food

I definitely believe in whimsy.

Not only do I use the fine china every day with my daughter, our cats drink out of my grandparents’ charming china teacups that they gifted me in their will.

There is a lot of hard in life, so I like to celebrate the little moments, and also create whimsical moments in my life and for my daughter. That includes whimsy food!

You’ll feel like you’re in a storybook with these whimsical food ideas that are almost too pretty to eat.

These 25 whimsy food ideas are perfect for garden parties, birthdays, afternoon tea, cozy gatherings, fairycore aesthetics, and anyone who believes food should be just a little bit magical.

Let me know if #15 below is something that makes you nostalgic too!

1. Colorful whimsy smoothies

Add a bit of blue spirulina powder (all-natural blue food coloring!) to your favorite smoothie recipe (here are five of my favorite breakfast smoothies), and you’ll have a gorgeous blue hue to whimsy up your morning.

2. Whimsy food sheepwich

Use a cookie cutter or sandwich cutter (these work great!) for the bread, smaller cookie cutters for cheese and lunch meat, and you have a way cuter sandwich that isn’t only for kids’ lunchboxes.

3. Whimsy food bento box

Turn a boring old hard-boiled egg (well, preferably not old) into a cute mouse egg with carrot ears and whiskers. Use peppercorns for the eyes.

Voila! Bento whimsy!

4. Bug-themed food

Babybel cheese transforms into a ladybug with just a few slices. Punch out dots for the mama ladybug out of a big slice of cheese.

Cut cucumber slices into flower shapes with a blueberry center, and kiwi becomes a flower with cherry tomato leaf.

5. Whimsical Pig

Add a touch of swine whimsy with this charming pig snack.

6. Whimsy food bear sandwich

There’s no excuse not to be whimsical.

This is an example of free-handing it. You can still make a cute whimsical sandwich without the cookie cutters, or sandwich cutters (though it will look neater with the sandwich shape cutters).

7. Whimsical happy face food

Make your food smile at you. Or frown, if that’s more your thing.

I like using these writing gel tubes, because they are already pre-filled; no need to fill (and learn how to use) a piping bag. Super easy way to whimsify your lunch.

Another way is to cut the crusts off of soft sandwich bread, then roll up and tie with a bow. I’m going to try these particular whimsy food ideas in my daughter’s lunches.

She’ll get happy face food or frowny face food depending on how her mood was in the morning before school (I’m kidding!).

8. Cottagecore bunny bread

Flower cucumbers, cheese head and ham ears on a rice cake, with shredded carrots on the side for the bunny, of course. Simple and fun.

9. Whimsical cat toast

This whimsy food idea takes seconds, but it does need a small kitchen tool – a small kitchen torch. Once you have one, you’ll want to torch so many things in your kitchen! Like food, I mean. You can make s’mores without a fireplace or fire pit. You can torch whipped cream on top of hot chocolate. And of course the cute animal toasts.

This kitchen torch is surprisingly inexpensive, and very easy to use.

10. Whimsy snacks in shot glasses

Food just looks cuter in shot glasses. Layer walnuts, pastrami, grapes, hard cheese, pomegranate seeds, baby pickles and little breadsticks in shot glasses.

Whimsy food for an afternoon pick-me-up, party food, or even a fun after school snack for your kid.

11. Whimsy food pets

Use dog or cat cookie cutters to cut lunchmeat. This is an easy 1-minute whimsy food hack to make your sandwiches way more fun.

You can even make whimsy food graduation sandwiches or fruit with these cookie cutters, or a barbecue and beer version with these. ๐Ÿ™‚

12. Pretty toast

Look in your fridge and pick the first three toppings you see that you could put on toast. Arrange them cutely.

This is actually a great way to use up leftover veggies, meat, and can get you thinking outside of your usually toast toppers.

13. Fruit pizza

My favorite crust for fruit pizza is a pre-baked almond crust that you can buy in many grocery stores (often in the frozen section).

Top with flavored greek yogurt, and fruit, and for added whimsical inspo, add edible flowers to the top.

14. Whimsy fruit skewers

Fruit on a stick is more fun than fruit in a bowl. Then put that fruit on a stick in a shot glass and you have double whimsy points.

Use a combo of your usual fruits, plus ones that pack a visual punch (dragon fruit, star fruit, etc.).

15. Whimsy party food: Fairy bread!

This was the quintessential whimsy food at every kids’ birthday party growing up from about ages 8-11. We all requested it, we loved it, and it’s insanely easy to make, and also completely nutritionally void.

Don’t try to make this healthier, let it be what it is:

White Wonder Bread with a spread of cream cheese, and rainbow sprinkles on top.

I believe that fairy bread was the original whimsy food inspo:

16. Whimsy food rice balls

Rice is an amazing food to make shapes with, like the cute snowman below. Form it into the shapes you want while the rice is still warm, and press together slightly, so it compacts like a snowball.

Add ham and pretzel accessories.

17. Berry toast

Berries are already so cute; instead of having them on the side with your lunch, top your bread with them. Spread either cream cheese, peanut butter, or cashew butter (my favorite!) on the bread to help the berries stick (and add protein if you use a nut butter).

18. Bear-y bread

For another quick whimsy breakfast, use bananas and berries to make cute edible bears. Butter or nutella work great for spreads.

19. Whimsical kitty rice

Another easy whimsy food idea with big cute factor.

Top salads with protein of choice, and these charming rice cats. A fun lunch or light dinner.

20. Spring whimsy food ideas

These chick, bunny, lamb, and egg open-faced sandwiches are great for Easter, but are also sweet for anytime in spring.

Simple cutouts, plus peppercorn or clove eyes makes these easy sandwiches come together in minutes.

I’m definitely going to make these whimsical sandwiches for my daughter.

21. Whimsical cheese wheels

An easy way to pretty-up your next cheese and cracker night. Top wheels of brie with a drizzle of honey, and edible flowers…practically instant whimsy!

22. Add flowers to salads for a touch of whimsy

Some edible flower varieties:

  • dahlias
  • honeysuckle
  • nasturtiums
  • pansies
  • roses
  • chamomile
  • lavender
  • and don’t knock dandelions: they are bright and sunshiney, are everywhere, and have impressive health benefits

You can even get these dried edible flowers from Amazon – no foraging required.

23. Whimsical egg open-face sandwich

I think this one is so cute.

Slice a hard-boiled egg in half, top with olive eyes and a red pepper smile.

Garnish with parsley or cilantro, topped on egg or goat cheese.

24. Whimsical flower-topped cupcakes

Use the edible flower list in whimsy food idea #22 and top either homemade cupcakes or store-bought cupcakes with pretty flowers in a variety of hues.

This makes for a gorgeous dessert for a tea party, cottagecore party, Mother’s Day, spring or summer birthdays, etc.

25. Whimsical tiny bites

Get out those tiny star cookie cutters to make watermelon stars.

Use nested flower cookie cutters to make cute flower versions of the fairy bread above.

5 Quick & Cheap Ways to Add Whimsy Food to Your Week

If you want to add whimsy to your plate, but don’t have time for a lot of fuss, try one of these simple, whimsical food ideas:

1. Easy whimsy food tip: Use small cookie cutters on fruit and cheese

This rainbow mix is super cute with all the different shapes; these edible gold stars are really fun and come in lots of different colors. They’re vegan and gluten-free too!

5. Serve snacks cut into cute shapes from shot glasses

Use the shape cutters on watermelon, cheese slices, ham, etc, and put in clear shot glasses for whimsical food fun.
