25 End-of-Summer Bucket List Ideas Before Fall Sneaks Up on You

Early in June of this year, I made a summer wish list for specific things I want to do with Miss O (or with friends/bf) this summer.

Most of the activities are kid-related, but when she was reading the list, she stopped at “The Beer Can patio” and “G&Ts on the porch”. “Mom, what are those?”

The end-of-summer bucket list ideas below are all family-friendly. 🙂

Most of these ideas are cheap or completely free.

Share your end-of-summer ideas in the comments below and you can also check out this list of 50 summer bucket list ideas to do throughout the summer.

I included an end-of-summer bucket list printable below you can keep on your fridge so the ideas are right there for you.

1. Watch One More Sunset

Slow down and intentionally watch a summer sunset (instead of catching it on your way home from getting groceries).

Grab a lawn chair, a blanket, or simply stand in your driveway and soak it in.

You could set up a picnic blanket on your grass and have dessert out there with the kids as you watch the sunset.

2. Have a Backyard Picnic

Why drive to a park when you can walk 17 feet and call it an adventure?

Pack sandwiches, fruit, and snacks and eat outside.

It’s more fun in a picnic basket if you have one. We don’t, but Miss O has a plastic toy picnic basket and we used that (she loved it).

3. Make Homemade Popsicles

Anything frozen on a stick tastes better.

Science.

I love chocolate milk popsicles for a protein-packed treat that tastes like a Fudgsicle.

4. Visit a Farmers Market

Browse fresh produce, local treats, and people-watch.

I love getting local berries from the farmers market since I haven’t grown berries since we moved into our new house.

We also always have to get the giant tumblers of hand-squeezed lemonade every summer.

5. Take a Community Bike Ride

We bike ride throughout the summer, but at the end of the summer for the past few years, we do a big community bike ride and it’s so much fun.

There are often about 15-20 kids and parents and we do a big loop together, stopping at a playground at the halfway point to play and have snacks. Then near the end of the bike ride we either stop for an ice cream treat or a slurpie.

It really caps off the end of summer and gets the kids excited to start school again so they can hang out every day (they’re still in grade school so most of them still love school!).

6. Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt

Make a list of things to find:

  • A butterfly
  • A feather
  • A yellow flower
  • A funny-shaped rock

Simple and surprisingly entertaining. We have these scavenger hunt bingo cards with sliders from Amazon and they make it extra fun. They’ve been a hit with my daughter and her friends.

We also have and love these car bingo cards for road trips. Great for non-screen car time.

7. Have a Movie Night Outside

A laptop, a sheet, and a few blankets can create movie-night magic for almost nothing.

If you’re lucky enough to have an old-school drive-in movie theatre, go to that! Such a fun, nostalgic place and there aren’t a ton of them around anymore.

For movie night inspo, here are 50 family movies to watch with your kids (and one to avoid, which apparently lots of people disagree with me about).

For the upcoming fall season, here are some cozy ideas for a fall movie night.

8. Eat Ice Cream for Dinner

The vegetables will forgive you.

My parents have this one down.

9. Visit a New Playground

Kids act like they’ve discovered Disneyland whenever they see unfamiliar swings.

There are often blog posts about “The Best Playground in ____ (insert your city)”. Search for your city and visit some of the new-to-you playgrounds at the end of the summer.

10. Read a Book Outside

If you have a hammock or backyard couch, gift yourself time to rest and read.

11. Host a Cheap BBQ

Keep it simple:

  • Hot dogs
  • Chips
  • Lemonade

Nobody has ever complained that a hot dog wasn’t fancy enough (don’t invite the hipsters).

12. Go Stargazing

Stay up past bedtime and look for constellations.

Or make up your own constellations. Nobody is checking.

13. Try a New Walking Trail

You don’t have to travel far to feel like you’ve gone somewhere.

There are often urban walking trails that are pretty gorgeous that probably many people in your city or town never get to.

There’s one urban trail in our city that makes you feel like you’re in Narnia and has intricate faces and animal designs carved into some of the trees.

14. Make a Summer Time Capsule

Fill a box with photos, notes, drawings, and funny memories from the season.

Open it next year or wait a few years until you forget what’s in there.

15. Have a Water Balloon Battle

A classic for a reason.

Prepare for betrayal from your own children.

16. Visit the Library

Libraries are basically air-conditioned treasure chests.

Many offer free programs, activities, and events all summer long.

17. Take a Day Trip Close to Home

Choose a destination within an hour of home and play tourist for the day.

A friend and I used to pick a direction – north, east, south, or west, and drive an hour in that direction to find new places to explore. It’s really fun and gets you seeing more of the place you live that you might not seek out otherwise.

18. Make S’mores

Campfire optional.

Microwave purists may proceed at their own risk.

19. Create a Summer Photo Challenge

See who can capture:

  • The funniest photo
  • The prettiest flower
  • The best cloud shape

You can even make a photo collage of your best pics of the summer using Canva.

(Canva is what I use for my graphics on The Curious Frugal and it’s super easy and fun to use. It feels like playing.)

20. Have a No-Spend Day

Challenge your family to have fun without spending a single dollar.

You might be surprised how creative everyone gets.

21. Watch the Sunrise

Even if you’re not naturally an early riser, consider trying this once over the summer.

Sunrises are beautiful and you’ll have so much day when you wake up for a sunrise.

22. Feed Ducks (Where Allowed, and Not Crap)

Bring appropriate bird food and enjoy a slow afternoon outside.

Please don’t bring bread or crackers or baked goods. Ducks don’t need junk food.

If you’re going to feed ducks, they like oats, rice (cooked or uncooked), and actually chopped leafy greens!

There is something about the sound of ducks quacking happily that brings you to the here and now and helps the worries float away.

23. Make a Summer Playlist

Fill it with songs that remind you of road trips, sunshine, and good memories.

I do this most summers, and now Miss O contributes song ideas to the summer playlist.

I find myself having to search for clean versions of songs now though, so I have some playlists that are just for when I’m driving around by myself or going for a run. 🙂

24. Write Down Your Favorite Summer Memories

Before everyone forgets. Even the hilarious stories that seem impossible to forget but somehow disappear by October.

I love this end-of-summer bucket list idea and my mom is always reminding me to “write it down!”. I actually email myself cute things that have happened, funny things that Miss O has said, etc.

It’s easier for me than keeping track of different journals around the house, and easier to write something down right away when you’re out.

25. Plan One Last Summer Adventure

It doesn’t have to be a big trip or even weekend getaway.

A beach day.
A hiking trail.
A family game night.
A picnic.

The goal is to end the season with intention instead of accidentally realizing summer is over because pumpkin spice products have appeared everywhere.

End-of-Summer Bucket List Final Thoughts

Summer doesn’t have to end with an expensive vacation or a packed calendar. Sometimes the best memories come from simple afternoons, cheap adventures, sticky popsicle fingers, and deciding to make the most of an ordinary day.

So pick a few ideas from this list, gather your favorite people, and squeeze every last drop out of summer before fall comes knocking.
