If you’re wondering what to actually do during a no-spend challenge, this is your guide of creative free ideas.
No-Spend November isn’t about sitting around bored and counting money. Though my daughter loves counting the saved allowance money she keeps in this save-spend-share bank. A future frugal living blogger in the making?

1. Have a Pantry Challenge Night
Make dinner only with what’s already in your cupboards—it’s like a cooking show challenge at home.
2. No-Spend November Stargazing Night
Bundle up, head outside, and see what constellations you can spot.
I really like the Night Sky app to show you what constellations, planets, and more are visible in your area.

Pick a theme (Harry Potter, Christmas classics, or cheesy 90s rom-coms) and make popcorn.
Here are 50 family movies to get you started with movie ideas.

6. Make a DIY Face Mask or Sugar Scrub
Use simple kitchen ingredients you already have:
DIY Sugar Scrub
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup olive oil or coconut oil
- Mix together and gently scrub hands, feet, or face. Rinse with warm water.
DIY Honey Face Mask
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon plain yogurt (optional for soothing)
- Smooth onto clean skin, leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse.
7. Host a Potluck with Friends
Everyone brings something, because that’s what a potluck is.
8. Host a Theme Night at Home
Pick a theme – like 80s night, pajama party, or “around the world”.
Plan music, food (from what you already have), and activities to match.
9. Read That Book That’s Been Sitting on your Shelf Forever
Not shopping will free up time to read. 🥹
Pull that book off the shelf that you’ve been meaning to read, lie down on the couch with a cozy blanket, and let yourself have a reading afternoon (or reading day if you’re lucky!).
10. Try a Free Online Yoga or Workout Video
My two favorite workout sites are Do Yoga With Me and Fitness Blender.
11. Start a Gratitude List for No-Spend November
Write down 10 things you’re thankful for – instant mood boost.
On a particularly grouchy mom and daughter weekend (we were both just out of sorts), I did this activity with my 9-year-old.
We had vastly different lists, made each other smile, and felt a lot better after.
12. Cook a Fancy Dinner at Home
Light candles, add music, and make it feel like date night.
13. Have a Digital Detox Day
Unplug from shopping, scrolling, and screens for a reset.
This might be a challenging one, but the peace you’ll feel at the end of the day will be worth it.
14. Try Free Local Events
Libraries and community centers often list free activities.
15. Make a “Dream Board”
Use magazines or printouts you already own – vision boarding on a budget.

I have also received some really cute free clothing from my local Buy Nothing Facebook Group – check yours!
19. Try a New Free Hobby for No-Spend November
Sketch, bake, or start a tiny indoor garden.
If you’ve never baked homemade bread before, I highly recommend it! It’s a super frugal way to make artisan bread, will make your house smell amazing, and you’ll feel impressed with yourself that you can call yourself a bread baker.
I share lots of no-knead bread recipes on the blog.
My favorite is this classic crusty bread (beginner-friendly!). This rosemary focaccia is really popular too. And this no-knead cheese bread.
I have received some really nice comments and messages from people who had been intimidated to bake their own bread, tried one of my recipes, and discovered a new passion.
20. Make a Big Pot of Soup
Use whatever’s in your fridge and freeze leftovers.
Here are 15 cozy and easy soup ideas to try.
21. Do a Puzzle or Crossword Night
Relaxing, screen-free, and a good mental workout. Youthful brains forever! 🧠
22. Camp Out in the Living Room
Build blanket forts, make s’mores in the oven (or even easier, this s’mores mug cake), and watch a movie.
If you have kids, I bet this frugal activity will become a core family memory for them!
23. Have a No-Spend November Self-Care Night
Bubble bath, DIY mask, early bedtime—it all counts.
24. Listen to a Podcast or Audiobook
Check your library app for downloads that cost nothing.
Or go here for a free 30-day trial of Audible so you can listen to your favorite audiobooks during your no-spend challenge.
I tried using my library app, but I found it very not-user-friendly unfortunately..
Yours might be better, but if not, grab a free trial of Audible.

#31 No-Spend November Bonus Idea: Give Yourself a (Free) Gift
I love this no-spend idea when it’s the end of November, and you are struggling to finish the no-spend challenge. Gift yourself something fun, but don’t spend any money on it.
How this works:
If you have ever bought a “just-in-case” gift, for upcoming birthdays or in case someone gifts you a Christmas gift and you didn’t specifically get them something…
You might tuck one or two of these away in a closet or room. I always have a couple kicking around, and do use them on occasion. But I know that I have a nice gift set from Bath & Body Works (this one!) that I didn’t gift last December.
If you’re feeling like quitting the challenge, consider giving yourself one of these “just-in-case” gifts at the end of No-Spend November. It’s a little boost to get you through the whole challenge.
